Fans and archivists discovered bizarre photos taken at a 1999 Nintendo event. They show Mario and Pikachu fighting in a match.
In a series of bizarre photos, Nintendohosts real-life wrestling matches featuring Mario, Pikachu, and many more. It was a promotion for the Super Smash Bros that came out in the same year. A wiki site dedicated to archiving lost media has started to circulate photos and details of the wrestling match.
1999 Super Smash Bros a fighting game featuring different characters from Nintendo’s titles was released on Nintendo 64. The game received multiple sequels over the years. 2018’s Super Smash Bros Ultimate has over 70 characters.
Smash Bros a beat-’em up, Nintendo decided to host a live wrestling match featuring the mascots Pikachu Mario Donkey Kong, Donkey Kon, and Yoshi. Official information and photos about the event were not visible to many, but fans and archivists at Lost Media Wiki managed to collect some details. The 1999 Nintendo event was known as Slamfest ’99. It was a promotional event for Super Smash Bros. The event was held at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park. The match was 17 minutes in length and was streamed via Real Player G2. There is no online video of the event, except for YouTube commentary videos. LMW discovered photos taken by Ed Espinoza which were then uploaded on Zelda 64 Planet.
LMW’s comments section is filled with fans that seem to be interested in helping find out more information about Slamfest’99. For example, one user pointed out KCL Productions’ costumes. Many seem to have their sights set on the official footage of this 17-minute-long match.
Nintendo has not yet organized a similar event where Super Smash Brosmascots can wrestle each other, but there are still many exciting events in the format of competitive esports competitions. Slamfest 1999 has been resurrected on the internet. Nintendo may just be considering bringing Slamfest back–perhaps when the next Super Smash Bros game comes out or in a future Nintendo Direct.
